Noisy Vehicle Exhaust Pipes May Lead You to Imprisonment and Fine

During a press conference that was held last month (February 2021), Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) chief Datuk Azisman Alias said that the offence is established in accordance to Rule 103 of the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Rules 1959. Quoting his words, as written by The Malay Mail, 

“The rule states that every exhaust pipe installed on a motorised vehicle must be maintained at all times so that it is in a good condition.

“So, anybody who modifies an exhaust pipe to the point of disturbing public peace is found to have committed an offence,” he said in a statement during the press.

Datuk Azisman also added that the police has been given the authority to seize the vehicle (motorcycle or car) in order to prevent further offences being repeated under Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

As such, Datuk Azisman said, the police would conduct integrated operations from time to time in collaboration with the Department of Environment (DOE).

“Through these operations, motorcycles will be checked to determine if the owner complies with the permitted exhaust pipe noise emission level.

“During the operations, the noise level of motorcycles will be measured to determine if it complies with the standard,” said the JSPT chief.

“If the noise level surpasses the permissible level, DOE will issue a compound to the owner of the motorcycle.”

“A compound will be issued by the DOE if the stipulated exhaust pipe noise emission level is breached,” he added.
